Office Cystoscopy
A cystoscopy is a procedure that allows us to closely examine the inside of the urethra and bladder using a thin, flexible camera called a cystoscope. This is most commonly done in the office using local anesthesia and typically takes just a few minutes.
At our office in Glens Falls, NY, we perform cystoscopies in a private, comfortable setting, allowing patients from the Capital Region, Saratoga, and the Adirondacks to get high-quality urologic care closer to home.

Why Is a Cystoscopy Performed?
Cystoscopy may be recommended to evaluate:
-
Blood in the urine (hematuria)
-
Recurrent urinary tract infections that have failed conservative management
-
Difficulty urinating or weak stream. Benign prostatic hypertrophy.
-
Bladder pain or irritative urinary symptoms
-
Abnormal imaging findings
-
Follow-up for bladder cancer surveillance

What to Expect During the Procedure
The procedure is done while you're awake, in a reclining position. A numbing gel is placed into the urethra to minimize discomfort. The flexible cystoscope is then gently inserted and advanced into the bladder. Sterile fluid flows through the scope to fill the bladder, allowing for full visualization.
The entire procedure typically lasts 5 to 10 minutes.
You may feel:
-
A cool sensation from the gel or fluid
-
Mild pressure or a fullness in the bladder
-
A brief burning sensation when urinating afterwards

Tips to Make the Procedure More Comfortable
Many patients are understandably anxious before their first cystoscopy. Here are some things that may help ease the experience:
-
Breathe deeply and slowly – Focusing on your breath can help relax your pelvic muscles and reduce discomfort.
-
Ask questions – Knowing what to expect often makes the procedure feel less intimidating.
-
Relax your legs and pelvis – Keeping your muscles loose can help the scope pass more easily.
-
Bring a support person – If you're nervous, it’s okay to have a family member or friend accompany you.
-
Let us know – If you have concerns or past negative experiences, we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Dr. Friedman takes time to explain the process and ensure you're comfortable and informed before starting. You’re always in control and can pause the procedure at any time.

Will I Need Antibiotics?
Most patients do not need antibiotics before or after a cystoscopy. However, in some cases—such as if you have a history of frequent infections, certain immune conditions, or other risk factors—we may give you a single dose of antibiotics on the day of the procedure to reduce any risk.

What to Expect Afterward
-
Mild burning or urinary frequency for 1–2 days is common
-
Blood-tinged urine may occur temporarily
-
Stay well hydrated to flush the bladder
-
Symptoms typically resolve without any treatment

Call our office if you experience:
-
Fever or chills
-
Worsening pain or bleeding
-
Difficulty urinating
