Understanding the UroLift System

The UroLift System is a minimally invasive treatment option for men with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. BPH is a common, non-cancerous condition that can cause symptoms like weak urine stream, frequent urination, urgency, and incomplete emptying.

Unlike procedures that remove or vaporize prostate tissue, UroLift works by using small permanent implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra, thereby relieving the blockage and improving urine flow.

Why UroLift May Be Recommended

UroLift is typically recommended for men with smaller to moderately enlarged prostates who are looking for symptom relief while preserving sexual function. It may be a good option if:

  • You want to avoid more invasive surgery

  • You prefer a treatment with minimal downtime

  • You wish to avoid side effects like retrograde ejaculation, which is more common with TURP or laser procedures

  • You are not a candidate for general anesthesia

While UroLift may not be appropriate for very large prostates or those with a significant median lobe, it offers a durable, effective alternative with a favorable safety profile.

Risks and Considerations

As with any procedure, UroLift carries potential risks, including:

  • Temporary burning with urination or urgency

  • Mild pelvic discomfort

  • Blood in the urine

  • Incomplete symptom relief if the prostate is very large or anatomy is complex

The UroLift procedure typically preserves ejaculatory and erectile function better than other surgical treatments. However, its long-term durability may be slightly lower than TURP or laser procedures, and some patients may require retreatment over time.

What to Expect on the Day of Your UroLift Procedure

Before the Procedure
You will arrive at the surgical center or office and meet your care team. UroLift is typically done under local anesthesia with mild sedation, but some patients may require deeper anesthesia based on comfort or preference.

During the Procedure
A small scope is passed through the urethra, and small implants are delivered into the prostate to retract the obstructing tissue. Most procedures take less than an hour and do not require any incisions or tissue removal.

After the Procedure
Many patients are able to urinate on their own shortly after the procedure and do not require a catheter. However, a temporary catheter may be placed if there is swelling or difficulty urinating.

Discharge and Recovery
Most patients go home the same day. Recovery is usually quick, with most men returning to normal activities within a few days. Some may experience temporary urinary symptoms that gradually improve over 1–2 weeks.

What to Expect at Home
You may notice some urinary urgency, frequency, or mild burning for a few days. These symptoms are typically short-lived. Most men report symptom relief within a few weeks, with minimal impact on sexual function.
