Understanding GreenLight Laser Vaporization of the Prostate

GreenLight Laser Vaporization of the Prostate is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. BPH is a common condition in aging men that can cause bothersome urinary symptoms such as slow stream, frequent urination, urgency, nighttime urination, and incomplete bladder emptying.

During this procedure, a high-powered laser is used to vaporize and remove the overgrown prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow. The laser energy is delivered through a small scope inserted through the urethra, meaning there are no external incisions.

Why GreenLight May Be Recommended

GreenLight laser vaporization offers an alternative to traditional surgical treatments like TURP. It may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Patients taking blood thinners who may not be candidates for TURP due to bleeding risk

  • Those looking for a shorter catheterization period and quicker recovery

  • Men with smaller to moderately enlarged prostates

Compared to TURP, GreenLight typically results in less bleeding, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal activities. However, both procedures are effective and the choice depends on your specific medical needs, prostate size, and personal preferences.

Risks and Considerations As with any procedure, there are potential risks. These may include:

  • Temporary difficulty urinating or urgency

  • Retrograde ejaculation (semen flowing backward into the bladder)

  • Urinary tract infection

  • Irritation or burning with urination during healing

GreenLight vaporization is generally associated with lower risk of bleeding than TURP and may be safer for patients on anticoagulation therapy. Long-term outcomes for urinary symptom relief are comparable to TURP.

What to Expect on the Day of Your GreenLight Procedure

Before surgery you will arrive at the hospital in the morning. After checking in, you will meet your surgical team and anesthesia provider. The procedure is typically done under spinal or general anesthesia, depending on your medical history. During the procedure a small laser fiber is inserted through a scope in the urethra and directed at the prostate tissue. The laser energy vaporizes the excess tissue, relieving the obstruction. The procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the prostate. After surgery a catheter will be placed into your bladder to help drain urine and flush out any small blood clots. Most patients are observed for a few hours in recovery. Most patients are able to go home the same day with a catheter in place. The catheter may be removed at home or in the office after a few days, depending on your comfort and the amount of postoperative swelling. Some patients may require an overnight stay, especially if additional observation is needed or if there is more bleeding than expected. We will always prioritize your safety when deciding on discharge timing. You may notice mild burning with urination, urgency, or pink-tinged urine for several days to weeks. These symptoms gradually improve as healing continues. Most patients notice better urinary flow and symptom relief within a few weeks.
