Vasectomy Procedure

A vasectomy is a safe, simple, and permanent form of male birth control. The procedure involves interrupting the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm, so that sperm can no longer mix with semen. This results in sterility without affecting testosterone levels, erections, or sexual function.

We provide in-office vasectomy services for men in Glens Falls, Saratoga, and the surrounding Capital and Adirondack regions—making it easier to access expert care close to home.

How the Procedure Works

We perform vasectomies in-office under local anesthesia, using a no-scalpel technique for minimal discomfort and faster recovery. The vas deferens are sealed using heat (cautery), clips, or sutures, depending on the individual case.

The entire procedure takes about 10–20 minutes, and you’ll be able to go home shortly after.

Pre-Procedure Preparation

To help the procedure go smoothly, we ask patients to follow a few simple steps the night before:

  • Shower thoroughly, including the groin area

  • Trim or shave the hair on the front of the scrotum (clippers or a razor are both fine)

  • Wear supportive underwear (like briefs or a jockstrap) to your appointment

If you're feeling anxious about the procedure, anti-anxiety medication can be provided. Please discuss this with us during your initial consultation so we can plan ahead for a safe and relaxing experience.

What to Expect After Vasectomy

  • Most men are able to return to light activities within 2–3 days

  • Use ice packs and snug underwear to reduce swelling and discomfort

  • Avoid ejaculation, heavy lifting, or strenuous exercise for about one week

  • Mild bruising or soreness is normal and temporary

We provide detailed aftercare instructions and remain available for questions throughout your recovery.

Sterility Timeline: When Is It Safe?

It’s essential to know that a vasectomy does not result in immediate sterility. After the procedure, sperm may still be present in the semen for a period of time.

Here’s the typical timeline:

  • You’ll continue using other contraception until cleared

  • At 3 months post-vasectomy, we’ll have you complete a semen analysis at a local lab

  • The goal is to confirm azoospermia (no sperm in the sample)

It’s not uncommon for the 3-month sample to show “sperm present”, especially non-motile sperm. This does not mean the procedure failed. It simply means more time is needed to fully clear the remaining sperm. In these cases, we’ll repeat the semen analysis again in about 6 weeks.

You should not rely on the vasectomy for birth control until we've confirmed that your semen is completely free of sperm.

Long-Term Expectations

  • Vasectomy is over 99% effective as a permanent contraceptive

  • It does not affect testosterone, erections, orgasm, or libido

  • Long-term complications are rare, and most men heal without issue

If you have future questions about pain, fertility, or reversal options, we’re always here to support you.
